RDA Gold Coast Executive Officer, Ian Pritchard, has met with IBM technology experts to investigate how disaster management can be improved in the region.

This is part of the IBM Smarter Cities Challenger grant awarded to the City of Gold Coast – only one of 50 grants distributed worldwide.

The Gold Coast is the second city in Queensland to be awarded a Smarter Cities Challenge grant after Townsville won the inaugural prize in 2011.

A team of six international IBM technology experts started their research on Monday, gathering information from a range of different public sector representatives.

The experts will be focusing on areas such as how to make the disaster management systems more interoperable and making sure the Council can communicate more effectively with the public.

The Council's Disaster Management Coordinator, Peter McNamee, says although the current system is effective, there is still room for improvement.

"The Gold Coast has a very good system in place for managing floods and fires and other types of hazards but the nice thing about the IBM project is they're going to help us link together different systems from different agencies to work out how do we get the people of the city plugged more into the systems," he said.

"It's got a lot of great potential for us."

The experts will report back to the council on November 1st with their recommendations.
